Material provided by the teacher at the beginning of the course.Analisi chimico farmaceutica. F. Savelli, O. Bruno. Ed. PICCIN.
Elementi di analisi chimica strumentale. R. Cozzi, P. Protti, T. Ruaro. Ed. Zanichelli
Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide the theoretical and practical basis for the purification and separation of active principles and the control of their quality.
Through lab exercises, the course intends to prepare students to choose and apply appropriate analytical methods in drug analysis.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry.
Teaching Methods
Frontal Lectures (3CFU), Practical Laboratory Exercises (3CFU)
Theoretical lesson attendance is highly recommended while the frequency of practical exercises is mandatory
Further information
Student reception: daily by appointment via e-mail.
Type of Assessment
Oral Exam. The final evaluation also takes into account the results achieved in laboratory exercises.
Course program
Fronctal lectures: Purification and separation of active ingredients: crystallization, sublimation, distillation, extraction methodologies (solid-liquid extraction, liquid-liquid extraction), solid phase extraction (SPE, SPME).
Chromatography: classification of the various techniques, separation theory, efficiency of a chromatographic system. Thin layer chromatography. Gaschromatography and HPLC: technical and application aspects.
Application of some spectroscopic techniques in the analysis: UV, IR, 1HNMR
Introduction to mass spectrometry.
EXERCISES: Crystallization of an unknown sample; extraction of caffeine from coca cola by liquid-liquid extraction and by SPE solid phase extraction; separation of a binary mixture; analgesic drugs analysis by TLC; recognition of mixture components by TLC; water sample analysis by ion exchange chromatography
