After an introduction regarding the chemical bond and the concept of molecular orbital, the students will be introduced to the study of the chemistry of the organic compounds through the knowledge of the nomenclature, structure and reactivity of the main functional groups. Moreover, the structure and the properties of the main classes of biologically relevant organic compounds, i.e. sugars, amino acids and peptides, as well as fats, will be dealt with.
In particular, the study of the structure and reactivity of the organic compounds will be dealt with starting with hydrocarbons (alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes and alkynes), and ending with organic compounds containing heteroatoms such as alcohols, epoxides, carboxylic acid derivatives, amines, etc. Part of the course will deal with the aromatic (benzene and derivatives) and conjugate systems.
Great emphasis will be given to the study of the reaction mechanisms through which it is possible to rationalize the transformations of the organic compounds and the fundamental princicples of the stereochemistry.
