Course program
(1) A brief excursus on the development of epidemiological research in public health realm. Epidemiological research versus other types of scientific health research. The role played by demographic, social and cultural factors on population health. Exercise in small groups: discussion on a paper published few decades ago, about the criteria to be used today to publish a similar study and about the today and the reliability of results.(2) The epidemiological research in public health realm: from the descriptive studies to the analytical and evaluation studies. Particular attention it is devoted to epidemiological surveillance systems, to cohort and case-control studies, and to intervention randomized trials. Exercise in small groups: discussion on a published paper.(3) The study protocol: development and evaluation fro scientific literature review to aim of the study, methods (study design, study population, source of information, data definition and registration, analysis and ethical aspects). Exercise in small groups: discussion on a study protocol.(4) The methods for data collection (source of information, questionnaires, biological markers, etc.). Data quality. The field work. The evaluation of obtained results in relation to the scientific evidences. Multidisciplinary and multicentre studies. Exercise in small groups: discussion on the development of methods in an illustrative study.
